Electromechanical design can be defined as design, packaging and manufacturing of micro-mechanical systems in combination with electrical and optical components. Due to the ongoing miniaturization in this field, the term micro and precision engineering is increasingly used. Typical working fields of engineers are develop and design of complex actuators, sensors and electromechanical systems using modern CAD/CAE technology and material engineering.

Institute of System Reliability and Machine Acoustics
Components in every aspect of mechanical engineering consist more and more of electrical parts and are supplemented by actuators and sensors. This modified components are so combined to complex systems with multiple functions. The interaction between single components and their influence on the reliability of the overall system is currently not well understood and the main area of research of the new Chair of System Reliability in Mechanical Engineering. Starting from common Methods of structural durability and reliability in mechanical engineering new concepts for assessing the system reliability of complex systems to be developed and verified. Beside the development of fundamentals, methods and procedures the application to manifold problems in mechanical engineering will be considered. The research work will be performed in close cooperation with the Fraunhofer-Institute for Structural Durability and System Reliability (LBF) in Darmstadt.
